Detailed Itinerary
Londorossi Gate (2,100m) → Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs | Zone: Rainforest
Begin at Londorossi Gate, trekking through a dense rainforest alive with exotic birds and colobus monkeys. The moderate hike leads to Big Tree Camp, set in a tranquil forest clearing for your first night under canvas.
Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hrs | Zone: Moorland
Trek out of the thick forest into open moorland zones, witnessing unique alpine flora and wide panoramic views. Reach Shira 1 Camp, located on a dramatic volcanic plateau offering breathtaking vistas of Kibo and Mount Meru.
Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs | Zone: Alpine Moorland
Continue gently across the expansive Shira Plateau, enjoying open vistas and ancient volcanic rock formations. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp by lunchtime, allowing ample time to rest and let your body adapt to the elevation.
Shira 2 Camp → Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hrs | Zone: Semi-Desert / Alpine
Trek east toward the Lava Tower (4,600m) for crucial high-altitude acclimatization before descending into the lush Barranco Valley. Camp beneath the towering cliffs of the Great Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs | Zone: Alpine Desert
Conquer the famous, non-technical Great Barranco Wall, then traverse undulating ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. This shorter trek maintains a steady, progressive altitude profile for optimal health and fitness.
Karanga Camp → Barafu Hut (4,700m)

Ascend through stark alpine desert landscapes toward Barafu Hut, your high-altitude base camp perched on a rocky ridge. Enjoy an early dinner, organize your summit gear, and rest before the midnight push.
