6-Day Marangu Route: The Classic Hut Route to Uhuru Peak
The 6-Day Marangu Route is the most traditional and popular path to Kilimanjaro's summit. Affectionately known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it provides a comfortable and well-organized trek with overnight stays in permanent mountain huts instead of camping tents. Over six days, climbers traverse lush rainforests, bamboo zones, heathlands, and alpine deserts with a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut for higher summit success.
Detailed Itinerary
Marangu Gate (1,860m) → Mandara Hut (2,700m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs | Zone: Rainforest
Begin your climb at Marangu Gate, where guides check permits and organize porters. Trek through dense rainforest filled with waterfalls, colobus monkeys, and vibrant birdlife along the way. Arrive at Mandara Hut, your first overnight stay in comfortable mountain huts surrounded by lush forest.
Mandara Hut (2,700m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hrs | Zone: Moorland / Heath
Ascend through bamboo and heath zones, enjoying wide panoramic views of the southern mountain slopes. The steady climb gradually acclimatizes your body to higher altitudes before arriving at Horombo Hut, your base camp for the next phase.
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs | Zone: Moorland
Rest and acclimatize at Horombo Hut. A short, gentle acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m) helps your body adjust naturally to higher altitude while rewarding you with spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hrs | Zone: Alpine Desert
Leave the moorlands behind and cross the vast alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your high-altitude base before the final summit push. Enjoy an early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight climb.
Kibo Hut (4,700m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking Time: 10–12 hrs | Zone: Arctic Summit
Start the summit push around midnight. Ascend steep, rocky trails past Gilman's Point (5,681m) to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at sunrise! Celebrate your monumental achievement before descending safely to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.
Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,860m) → Arusha/Moshi
Hiking Time: 5–6 hrs | Zone: Rainforest
